Art-is-You 2012

Wanted to post an update to my ARt-is-You classes in Petaluma and Stamford.  In Petaluma I have withdrawn the Spun Cotton Figures class, due to lack of students.  The other classes Photoshop and Dressmaker Sample book are still open.

Stamford is still early .. so will let you know how that is going in a few weeks... In the meantime.. here is BookWorm

A Feast of the Arts

This Sunday, May 6th at 2 p.m. the Historical Society of Newburgh Bay in New York is hosting an art auction..it is beiing held in at at the Newburgh Brewing Company 88 South Colden Street, Newburgh New York.  Art and Artists from all over will be participating and the auction starts at 4pm.  I have sent a piece, though I will not be able to attend the event, if you are in the area it looks like it will be a smashing event!

Came the Spring...

Lasst week my friend Dierdra Doan... (please check her blog..she is an amazing talent)  asked about the piece posted below and how I process in Photoshop.   My pieces often begin with me flipping through the 10,000 plus images I have either scanned in or found on line in places like "The Graphics Fairy" - a favorite of mine.  Sometimes I have a specific goal.. but very often I am just looking for a challange. what elements or pieces can I pull out of my collection and turn them into a collage...??

This image was made using Photoshop CS5, but would work equally as well in Photoshop Elements

 I found the iris image in my collection, and chose a collage size of 5 x 7 inches at 300 dpi.  This is a size I often use, it makes a nice card size or re-size for a larger print.  Then I looked for other images I thought might go well with it and here is a pallet of pieces I used.
 

First I put the iris image on my canvas:
After looking at the iris, I cut out a couple of the petals and and using the key command control/command J.  duplicated the petals, so I could move them around the image as I wished.

Now I added the two ladies with their bouquets and positioned one at the bottom of the collage and one on the flower. Once the lady was on the iris, I could then move the cutout petals over her, to make it appear she is standing inside the flower.

Ok.. I like where the ladies are situated, but I want to tell a story with this collage, and now I think that story will be about the arrival of spring.  I want to keep it simple, but add a few more elements for interest.  Giving each of the ladies wings appeals to me for this piece.  So, I add the wings and change the "blend mode" on them so their color is more in "keeping" with the feel of the collage..

At this point, I think I need a soft background to blend it all togehter, so I added a soft beigh and a piece of a post card.  I like the subtle look and feel of these pieces.

So, now the image has begun to flow, but it needs a little something more to complete it, so I pulled in the white tulip image and placed in the far lower right corner and added a butterfly...

Adding a little text makes the collage complete.  I did go back and tweek the brightness and contract on some elements in the collage.  Here is the final image...I hope you enjoyed your visit..!

 

Tiny Tattered Album June 3rd

                         Come join me on a book making adventure at New England Scrap in Canton, Ct. on June 3rd

Scraps, I have lots of lovely scraps and want to use them, but many of them are too small for larger projects.  So, here is a tiny album, designed to use and enjoy all those lovely little tattered and worn items.  We will be using an old book cover cut in half as the basis for this 5 x 4 inch book.   We will use watercolorpaper for the pages then adding laces, trims, paints and etc. to create a tiny masterpiece where you can incorporate your favorite quotes, notes and little pictures from you collections.

WorkShop: Any Level, no Prior Experience

Time: 6 hours:  Which will give students time to make the book, but journaling and adding to it will be done on

their own time.

 Supply List:

Basics, scissors, rulers, etc.

Tablet or sheets of water color paper. Enough for 15 to 20 (8 x 5 inch) pages.

All the tiny scraps you can muster

Old Buttons, embellishments

Two or three colors of paint if we each bring a favorite color or two, we can share, saves on lugging lots of paint colors.

and you can also bring portfolio crayons, or whatever you like for adding color to pages.

Fabric Tack Glue (Michael’s, A.C. Moore)

I am bringing a small sewing machine, but if you are driving and have one to share, it would be appreciated.

Transparences for transferring onto fabric or paper.
